5 Reasons Why Hotel Slippers Use Thin Material

Written by Ganjar

Whenever you stay at a hotel, you're bound to find a pair of hotel slippers waiting for you. These slippers are usually white, branded with the hotel's logo, and made of a soft, thin material.

Ever wondered why these hotel slippers are so thin, unlike the thicker ones we often use at home? There are actually several reasons behind this design choice. In this article, we'll explore some of those reasons.

1. Low Production Cost

The main reason for the thin design of hotel slippers is cost efficiency. Hotels typically buy these slippers in large quantities to accommodate all their guests. Using thinner materials cuts down the production costs considerably.

This cost-saving allows hotels to provide slippers as a complimentary amenity without having to hike up room rates. Even though they're inexpensive to make, these slippers are still durable enough for their intended short-term use.

Moreover, their simple and practical design meets guests' basic needs without adding extra production costs for features that aren’t essential.

2. Materials Used

Hotel slippers are usually made from lighter materials like EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate), flannel, sponge, paper, non-woven fabric, plastic, and even cardboard. These materials help keep the slippers thin yet comfortable for use.

Despite their thinness, these materials are still cozy enough for walking around hotel rooms, whether it's on carpet or ceramic floors.

3. Short-Range Use

Hotel slippers are intended for short-term use only, primarily during a guest's stay. Since most guests stay just a few days, there’s no real need for slippers that are built to last. Thin slippers are perfectly adequate for the brief period they are used.

Once guests check out, these slippers are not reused but are disposed of. Given their single-use nature, it wouldn't make sense economically or environmentally to produce them with thicker, more durable materials.

4. Easy to Clean

Hygiene is a top priority in the hospitality industry. Thin and disposable slippers are beneficial for hotels striving to maintain high cleanliness standards. Generally, after one guest uses them, they are thrown away and replaced with fresh ones for the next guest.

Some hotels, however, opt for washable slippers that can be reused by different guests. Due to their thin material, these slippers are easier to wash and quicker to dry.

5. Easy to Carry and Store

Additionally, the slim design of hotel slippers means they can be stored in bulk without requiring much space. This also simplifies the process for hotel staff when distributing slippers to guest rooms.

Moreover, hotel slippers are often items guests can take home. Thus, if guests decide to keep the slippers as a souvenir, they won’t have any trouble fitting them into their luggage because they don’t take up much space.

So, those are the five reasons why hotel slippers are made with thin materials. Essentially, the design is carefully considered to cater to both guest needs and hotel operational efficiency.

However, note that not all hotels use thin slippers. For instance, at Grandmas Plus Legian Bali, the slippers provided are quite thick. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take those slippers home for free.
