5 Differences Between a Vacation and a Staycation

Written by Ganjar

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, a new term has become popular when it comes to taking time off: staycation. Many people now prefer a staycation over a traditional vacation.

But what exactly is the difference between the two? If you're not sure, this article will walk you through what distinguishes a vacation from a staycation, helping you decide which style suits you better.

1. Definition of Vacation and Staycation

A vacation, derived from the word "vacate," means to leave your home and travel to a different location. This usually

involves staying overnight at hotels, resorts, villas, or other accommodations, and engaging in various activities like visiting tourist attractions, dining at different restaurants, and exploring new areas.

On the other hand, a staycation combines the words "stay" and "vacation," meaning you take a break without venturing far from home.

During a staycation, we usually stay at a nearby hotel, resort, or villa but focusing on relaxation rather than sightseeing. Instead of exploring the city, you spend your time enjoying the amenities provided by the accommodation.

2. Duration of the Vacation

Another difference is the length of time spent on a vacation versus a staycation. Vacations typically last longer, often spanning several days to a few weeks, allowing ample time to explore all the attractions in the chosen city or country.

Staycations, however, are generally shorter. You might spend a weekend or even just a single day on a staycation since there's no need to travel far.

Additionally, extending a staycation over many days can sometimes lead to boredom, as the focus is more on relaxation than exploration.

3. Cost

Cost is another area where vacations and staycations differ significantly. Vacations usually come with higher expenses due to airfare, accommodations, meals at restaurants, transportation, and entry fees for tourist attractions.

In contrast, while staycations also involve expenses for accommodations and sometimes meals, they tend to be more budget-friendly.

Without the need for extensive travel or paying for tourist attractions, the overall cost is typically lower. Plus, the shorter duration of a staycation often translates to reduced lodging expenses.

4. Relaxation Level

Vacations are undoubtedly fun and exciting, especially when visiting new destinations. However, they can also be exhausting for some people.

Long journeys, complicated planning, and the need to ensure everything from travel documents to packing is in order can add stress. The energy spent on organizing and executing a vacation can sometimes diminish its enjoyment.

If you prefer a more laid-back approach, a staycation might be the perfect option. Staycations offer a higher level of relaxation because you can unwind without the hassle of long trips or extensive preparations.

All you need to do is settle into your chosen accommodation and enjoy your downtime at a leisurely pace, without the pressure of visiting multiple tourist spots.

5. Experiences and Activities

The experiences and activities are another key difference between a vacation and a staycation. Vacations offer the thrill of exploring new places and immersing yourself in different cultures.

You get to visit renowned tourist attractions, sample local cuisines, and interact with people from diverse backgrounds.

In contrast, a staycation usually provides fewer new experiences. While you can still enjoy local culture and cuisine, it won't be as immersive as experiencing it firsthand in a different locale.

However, a staycation can offer a more intimate and personal experience, especially if you're spending it with a loved one.

It's an opportunity to relax, indulge in hobbies, watch movies, or read books, all while enjoying the amenities your accommodation offers, such as a swimming pool, gym, or even karaoke.

In summary, both vacations and staycations have their unique pros and cons. A vacation allows you to explore new places and gain different experiences, but it may involve higher costs and more complex planning.

On the other hand, a staycation offers convenience and a higher level of relaxation, as it requires minimal travel. So, which would you prefer: a vacation or a staycation?
